She is also a finalist for the 2015 Bell Labs President’s Award as part of the IMS Cloud Orchestration team. She has been Guest Editor for the Bell Labs Technical Journal and IEEE Communications Magazine. She has over 10 granted patents and multiple publications.

Barry L. ShoopDEAN, Albert Nerken School of Engineering, The Cooper Union & Former Director of the Electrical Engineering Program, West Point

Barry L. Shoop became Dean of the Albert Nerken School of Engineering in January 2019 after retiring as a Brigadier General from a 38-year career in the U.S. Army. For the last 25 years, he served in a number of key leadership roles at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point including Director of the Photonics Research Center, Director of the Electrical Engineering Program and most recently as Professor and Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. In this capacity, he was responsible for an undergraduate academic department with over 79 faculty and staff supporting Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited programs in electrical engineering, computer science, and information technology. The department engages over 2300 students annually and has three affiliated research centers including the Cyber Research Center, Photonics Research Center and the Robotics Research Center.
Earlier in his career, he was a satellite communication engineer responsible for the design and installation of a high-capacity, global digital communication network, and also the Chief Technology Officer for a US$4.5B organization addressing the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) challenge worldwide.
Dr. Shoop received the B.S. degree from the Pennsylvania State University and Ph.D. from Stanford University, both in electrical engineering. His research interests include optical information processing, neural networks, image processing, disruptive innovations and educational pedagogy. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) and a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Eta Kappa Nu, and Sigma Xi. He has served on the Board of Directors of OSA, ABET and IEEE. In 2016 Dr. Shoop served as the IEEE President and CEO. In 2008, OSA recognized him with their Robert E. Hopkins Leadership Award and, in 2013, he received both the SPIE Educator Award and the IEEE Haraden Pratt Award. Dr. Shoop holds a patent on photonic analog-to-digital conversion and has authored over 150 archival publications as well as 8 books and book chapters. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia, USA.

Huei Peng received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992. He is now a Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. He currently serves as the Director of Mcity, which studies connected and autonomous vehicle technologies and promotes their deployment. His research interests include adaptive control and optimal control, with emphasis on their applications to vehicular and transportation systems. His current research focuses include design and control of electrified vehicles, and connected/automated vehicles.
He served as the US Director of the DOE sponsored Clean Energy Research Center—Clean Vehicle Consortium, which supports more than 30 research projects related to the development of clean vehicles in the US and in China.
He has served as the PI or co-PI of more than 60 research projects, with a total funding of more than 60 million dollars. He has more than 300 technical publications, including 150 in referred journals and transactions and four books. His h-index is 76 according to the Google scholar analysis. The total number of citations to his work is more than 21,500. He believes in setting high expectation and helping students to exceed it by selecting innovative research topics with high impact. One of his proudest achievements is that more than half of his Ph.D. students have each published at least one paper cited more than 100 times.

Prior to joining Econolite, Mr. Steudle was director of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) since 2006, overseeing MDOT’s over $4.7 billion-dollar budget, and was responsible for the construction, maintenance, and operation of nearly 10,000 miles of Michigan’s highways and more than 4,000 highway bridges at a department with 2,700 employees.

Mr. Steudle is a nationally recognized leader in the development of Connected and Automated Vehicle Technologies (CAV), and is the President and CEO of the American Center for Mobility (ACM), a role he will continue through CAVita. ACM is a purpose-built facility for testing, developing, and validating CAV vehicles at Willow Run Michigan airport. He was also the 2014-2015 Chair for the ITS America Board of Directors. He is a member of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Program Advisory Committee to the USDOT. Steudle is a Past President of AASHTO and Chairs the Standing Committee on Highways. He was a 2014 member of the National Research Council for the National Academy of Science and the 2014 Chair of the TRB Executive Committee. He also chaired the second Strategic Highway Research Program Oversight Committee (SHRP 2) for TRB.

Mr. Steudle is a graduate of Lawrence Technological University, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction Engineering. He also serves on the College of Engineering Advisory Board and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2012.

Mr. Steudle is a nationally recognized leader in the development of Connected and Automated Vehicle Technologies (CAV), and is the President and CEO of the American Center for Mobility (ACM), a role he will continue through CAVita. ACM is a purpose-built facility for testing, developing, and validating CAV vehicles at Willow Run Michigan airport. He was also the 2014-2015 Chair for the ITS America Board of Directors. He is a member of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Program Advisory Committee to the USDOT. Steudle is a Past President of AASHTO and Chairs the Standing Committee on Highways. He was a 2014 member of the National Research Council for the National Academy of Science and the 2014 Chair of the TRB Executive Committee. He also chaired the second Strategic Highway Research Program Oversight Committee (SHRP 2) for TRB.

Mr. Steudle is a graduate of Lawrence Technological University, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Construction Engineering. He also serves on the College of Engineering Advisory Board and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2012.
